Headteacher's Welcome

The children have coped really well with their first full week in school and are settling so well into their new classes and routines. It has been lovely to have our new Reception children in all week - well done for you first full week of school! We have also been joined by our new Caterpillars in Preschool; they have been so brave leaving their grown ups and have settled so well. Every time I have popped into class they have been having a super time exploring their fabulous classroom and getting to know each other.

THANK YOU PTA

We would like to say a very special thank you to our PTA who have kindly funded lots of additions to our Reception and Y1 classrooms including cosy reading arches, and some beautiful furniture which has enable us to develop the classrooms to give even more opportunity for children to increase independence, learn through play and develop their relationships with each other.

The funds raised by the PTA really do have a direct impact of the educational experience of all our children. We have been well supported by our fabulous PTA for many years however we are currently really short of support have lost some valued members whose children have moved onto the junior school. You do not have to give a full commitment but if you are able to help out with the occasional events then we will be incredibly grateful. The next meeting is at the Florentine on 22nd September at 7:45pm

Allergies in School

We have a number of children in school who have severe allergies. Please do not send any products to school containing nuts. This includes cereal bars, biscuits, peanut butter sandwiches etc

We have noticed some children bringing snacks to school this week containing nuts e.g. Nutella sandwiches, almond croissants. All children are given a piece of fruit for snack in the morning - they may bring an alternative fruit / veg snack but we request that you do not send any other food for snack time.

Eggs - we also have some children will egg allergies - we know that cooked egg is in many products adn can be difficult to avoid however we do ask that you avoid sending foods with a high egg content e.g. egg sandwiches, scotch eggs etc

Encouraging your child to wash their hands regularly, including before school can also reduce the risk of a reaction.

Dates for the Diary

Please see the attached parent calendar which contains lots of important dates that you might want to put in you diaries including Nativity (Y1), Spring Concert (Reception) andY2 Leaver's Performance.

Please also not that on Friday 18th of December we have Christmas singing outside for parents at 1:45pm. After school club finishes at 4:00pm on this day.

Contact with Teachers

If you need to contact your child's class teacher you may email them using the class email which is the name of the class as follows e.g. bears@nethergreen-inf.sheffield.sch.uk, koalas@nethergreen-inf.sheffield.sch.uk etc

Please do not expect an immediate response as teachers are teaching all day and are not expected to reply to emails during evenings and weekends. For a quick chat you can wait at the end of the day. For urgent messages please contact the school office.

Welcome back! We hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer and made the most of the glorious weather!

The children have hopefully enjoyed being back at school, seeing their friends and settling into their new classes.

The PTA are looking forward to getting started and planning another year of events. Our first meeting of the new school year is on Tuesday, 22nd September at 7.45pm at The Florentine. We’re particularly keen to welcome some new members this year, as several of our previous members have now moved up to the Juniors. If you’re able to get involved, even occasionally, please do come along – we’d love to see you there!

Looking forward to seeing everyone and getting the new year underway.

Parent School Partnership

There are lots of things that parents and carers can do do help us to keep our school a happy, safe place for everyone.

Here are a few requests from us...

1) Please remember our school is a mobile free-zone - this means no phones should be used in the school grounds (this includes the playground). This is for safeguarding reasons.

2) WhatsApp groups have been set up in many classes by parents - these are a great way to stay in touch, plan social events and remind each other of events that are taking place in school. Please do not use these to discuss any issues or concerns you have about school or things that have happened in school; please come and talk to us if you have any worries about anything. WhatsApp is not the appropriate forum to do this and it can end up causing unnecessary anxiety for parents. If you are not on the class WhatsApp yet - chat to other parents at pick up and someone will be able to help.

3) Dogs - we understand with busy lives combining the school run with a dog walk can be helpful, however we ask that you keep dogs away from the steps up to the main gate and the ramp up to Preschool. However lovely your dog may be, some children are frightened and to them some of dogs feel very big!

4) Please ensure your child arrives on time. The main gate will close just before 8:55am to ensure children are in class ready for register at 8:55am. Phonics is the first lesson of the day - this is where we teach your child to be an amazing reader! Being late is unsettling for your child and means they will miss very important learning too. The Preschool gate will open at 8:30am and will close at 8:40am when the main gate opens.

5) Please read all communication that comes home - this will keep you informed about everything that is happening.

Reminder about DFE Attendance Guidance

As you may be aware school attendance has become a national issue in the last few years.

The DFE have implemented statutory guidance to encourage children to attend school as often as possible.

Children are expected to attend school every day unless they are too unwell to be in school or there is an exceptional circumstance.

Last year the DFE brought in stricter rules about school absence. What this means in practice is:-

increased fines for parents taking children out of school during term time for holidays
closer monitoring and potential prosecution for irregular attendance - 10 unauthorised absences within 10 weeks (1 absence = 1/2 a day)

We were really pleased that last year the majority of parents worked with us in partnership to ensure their child was in school as much as possible - this meant we ended the year with 97% attendance which is higher that the Sheffield and National averages.

What this means for parents:-

Please report absence by 9:00am every morning by phoning or emailing the school office
Term time holidays will not be authorised and the Local Authority will fine parents
Parents can be fined for 10 sessions unauthorised absence during a 10 week period - 1 session = a morning or afternoon
Staff will ask for evidence of medical appointments e.g. a letter or text message
