 Applying for a school place

We live out of catchment. How likely are we to be   offered a school place at Nether Green Infant   School?

We are a local community school serving the geographical areas of Fulwood, Nether Green and Broomhill.

Due to a fall in the birth rate across Sheffield in the last three years, we have not been full and currently about 30% of our school population come to us from out of catchment.

Sheffield data shows that this trend is likely to continue for the next few years.

 What happens after Y2?

Which school can my child go to when they leave   at the end of Year 2?

We are an Infant School, meaning that children are educated with us until the end of Year 2.

As a school maintained by Sheffield Local Authority we must follow Sheffield's admissions procedures. Therefore all children who leave us must apply for a Y3 place at a junior or primary school.

The vast majority of children who leave us choose to move on to Nether Green Juniors, although a  small number opt for other schools.

Is my child guaranteed a place at Nether Green   Junior School?

There is no guarantee of a place, but as a designated feeder school to Nether Green Juniors, children who come to our school do have priority for places.

Places are prioritised in the following order.

1) Child living in catchment with siblings at NGJS and who attends a designated feeder school

2) Child living in catchment without siblings at NGJS who attends a designated feeder school

3) Child living in catchment who attends Nether Green or Broomhill Infant School

4) Child living out of catchment who attends Nether Green or Broomhill Infant School

5) Child living out of catchment who does not attend a feeder school

So whilst there is no guarantee,  I can reassure you that I have been Head Teacher here for the past four transitions to the Juniors and in my time we have never had a child who has requested a place and not been allocated one (including those who live a considerable distance from the school). Whilst the number between ourselves and Broomhill do total more than the number of places at NGJS we always find that some children move onto other schools too, for example in the Private sector and also Specialist places for SEND.  It is therefore highly unlikely that you would be unable to secure a place at Nether Green Juniors if you so wished.

 Eating and drinking at school

What can my child eat for lunch?

School dinners are provided or your child can choose to bring a packed lunch from home.

All children in Infant schools are entitled to a free school meal every day.

We use a company called Taylor Shaw, used by many schools in Sheffield, to cook our meals.

The meals are cooked freshly on site everyday.

What if my child is a fussy eater?

The children choose each day what they would like to eat from the menu and this is made to order.

We have a lunch menu which follows a three weekly cycle.

Each day there is the option of:-

1) A hot meat dish

2) A hot vegetarian dish

3) A jacket potato (a different filling each day)

4) A 'grab bag' - this is a sandwich, a piece of fruit and a cake/biscuit

The menu is shared with parents so you can look at home each morning to see what your child might like.

If your child doesn't like any of the options you can send a packed lunch from home.

My child has an allergy to certain foods. Can they   still have school dinners?

Yes - If your child's allergy has been diagnosed by a doctor, you can apply for a 'medical diet' through Taylor Shaw. This will ensure that the menu is adapted to meet the individual needs of your child.

Staff in school will be made aware of any allergies and any health care plans that support these.
