Our Year 2 children learn the skills and knowledge found in the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum. Lessons are planned within the following subjects:
- PHSE & British Values
- RE (Locally agreed syllabus)
The children have three exercise books where they record their work:
Discovery Book - English and cross curricular tasks which includes all subjects except maths
Maths Book - includes written and practical maths work
Handwriting Book - to help children concentrate on the correct formation
The teachers plan much of the children's learning around a KS1 topic for Year 1 & Year 2. The topics are planned within a two year cycle which enables classes to work closely together.
The topic cycle for 2017/18 and 2018/19

Phonics and Spelling
Daily spelling lessons take place to teach the spelling patterns set out in the National Curriculum for Year 2.
Children who need additional support for phonics, who did not meet the expected standard in Year 1, receive interventions throughout Year 2.
They have opportunities to read individually and in group guided reading sessions. They will read from different schemes including, Oxford Reading Tree, Heinemann, Collins and Ginn.
To find out how we teach calculations please look at the videos of our parent workshop on the Key Stage 1 page.
Helping at home
Parents and carers are encouraged to help their children at home with reading, writing, handwriting and maths etc. We recommend parents read their child's fortnightly news letter, sent via email for up dates on how they help each week. Our children also have log in details to access an online learning platform called Purple Mash.
