Our Year 1 children learn the skills and knowledge found in the KS1 National Curriculum.
Lessons are planned within the following subjects:
- PHSE & British Values
- RE (Locally Agreed Syllabus)
The children have three exercise books where they record their work:
Discovery Book - English and cross curricular tasks which includes all subjects except maths
Maths Book - includes written and practical maths work
Handwriting Book - to help children concentrate on the correct formation
The teachers plan much of the children's learning around a KS1 topic for Year 1 & Year 2. The topics are planned within a two year cycle to accommodate the mixed age class.
The topic cycle for 2017/18 and 2018/19:
|2017||Where we Live||Inventing and Creating||Once Upon a Time|
|Grow, Grow, Grow!|
The children have a daily phonics session, these are taught within children's classes. Some children have additional individual or small groups work to support their learning in phonics.
For further information about phonics please see our information for parents that was shared at out talk on 16.1.18.
The children in Year 1 do 'Paired reading' three times a week as part of their phonics lesson. There is some information about this in the Year 1 Phonics Talk powerpoint above.
In addition to this, the children have opportunities to read individually. They read from a range of books taken from different reading schemes including Oxford Reading Tree, Heinemann, Collins and Ginn. Children also visit our school library where they can choose and read a range of books.
Helping at home
Parents and carers are encouraged to help their children at home with reading, writing, handwriting and maths etc. We recommend parents read their child's fortnightly news letter, sent via email for up dates on how they help each week. Our children also have log in details to access an online learning platform called Purple Mash.
